The
Ask
Heart of America creates and maintains a diverse library of murals to install around the United States. They approached KNOCK with the request to add to that library. These murals would be placed in various community buildings with the goal to encourage and enlighten youth and kids, to expand their minds, and explore the world of STEM.
The
Solve
What kids connect with and what kids needs is wide and varied. My goal was to create a variety of murals depicting various levels of excitement and activity. Keeping in mind community involvement with painting and cost of paint, I wanted to maintain a “paint by number” style, while keeping the murals vibrant, with a minimal palette.
Levels of Opportunity
A flattened dollhouse style snapshot of a variety of career paths. While highly differentiated, an emphasis was put on connectivity between rooms to represent a flexibility and connectivity in careers.
Endless Opportunities
In addition to the rooms included in the final version of the mural, I included additional rooms in an individual mural library. This keeps the community in mind, and allows them to have some autonomy over how their community is represented in the mural.
Underwater Serenity
An abstract landscape that the viewer can look at for many minutes and continue to find something new. Some images may be immediately identifyable, others intentionally take a minute to see. The underwater scene will be less colorful and more monochromatic to support a calm soothing environment.
90’s Nostalgia
Throw it back to the 90’s graffiti street-style while remaining STEM focused. This style embraces geometric shapes and stark drop shadows to make the various elements of math, science and tech fly off the wall. Popart colors will ladder up to the high energy of the style, giving the viewer something new to see each time they walk past.
Regional Flowers
This mural is unique in its ability to be highly customizable. Not only did I create the illustration and template for this mural, but I also created a library of regional plants for communities to integrate into their mural. Thus, making this mural inspirational with the quote, and educational with the flowers.
Outerspace and Beyond
Fun doodle-like illustrations encourage kids to remain playful, curious and creative. Like with previous murals, I wanted this mural to encourage and inspire, while remaining approachable to kids.
Yes, You Can
Sometimes you need somebody or something to give you extra encouragement. This mural is geared towards younger kids, whose curiosity and imagination can run wild. To those kids who can be told they can do anything by a fox and a racoon. Like with the dollhouse room mural, I created an additional cast of characters with different professions for communities to choose from.
